KNOW MORE ABOUT IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, commonly known as IBS, is a gastrointestinal disorder caused by Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) which manifests itself in the form of repetitive constipation or diarrhoea or both.

IBS is a functional disorder wherein the symptoms arise due to a gut imbalance that affects the gut-brain interaction.

Did you know, approximately 75% with IBS remain undiagnosed.

IBS is often also linked to SIBO, SIFO, or SIPO (Small Intestinal Bacterial, Fungal, or Parasitic Overgrowth), which is are conditions affecting the small intestine. Not all IBS cases originate from SIBO, SIFO, SIPO in origin, but these infestations could lead to IBS.

To better understand how the condition affects your stool and gut flora, it is imperative to first know the 3 main subtypes of IBS…

  • IBS with Constipation (IBS-C)

This condition is marked by constipation and abdominal discomfort.

In this case, the bowel movements are mostly hard and lumpy, and sometimes loose.

  • IBS with Diarrhoea (IBS-D)

Those with this condition mainly experience diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort.

Bowel movements are loose and watery most of the time.

It is interesting to note that IBS symptoms vary between genders. For example, women often experience IBS-C while men more frequently suffer from IBS-D.

  • IBS-Mixed (IBS-M)

This form of IBS involves alternating between loose stools and constipation.

Bowel movements are both, hard and lumpy and loose and watery.

Some other causes of IBS include…

  • Gut-Brain dysfunction
  • Stressful conditions
  • Food intolerance
  • Bacterial infection
  • Improper metabolism of Bile Acid
  • Imbalance in gut microbial flora
  • Constant use of medications such as antacids and antibiotics
  • Sleep deprivation
  • High intake of processed sugar
  • Presence of heavy metals in the body
  • Deficiency of key nutrients such as Zn, Mg and Vitamin D3
  • Various gut related inflammations

And if you are wondering if you could be suffering from IBS, then these are some of the SYMPTOMS that you must take note of…

  • Constipation or Diarrhoea
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Stomach pain
  • Passing of mucus through the stools
  • Passing excessive wind
  • Nausea
  • Burping
  • Joint Pain related to certain foods
  • Brain fog
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Food intolerances

IBS -THERAPEUTIC APPROACH, THE ATMANTAN WAY

The goal of IBS management is to treat the root cause of the problem and to improve the gut lining by rebuilding the gut microbiome balance. In addition to this, the focus here is also towards improving gastric motility (movement of food from the mouth through pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small and large instestine, and out of the body).

If IBS is associated with SIBO, SIFO, and SIPO, then our approach involves eliminating this infection and repairing the leaky gut. The overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria can cause IBS; This bacteria survives by obtaining oxygen from glucose. Therefore, reducing the glucose and carbohydrate intake helps eliminate this unwanted bacteria from the gut.

ATMANTAN’s MANAGEMENT and TREATMENT PROTOCOL for IBS

Our natural IBS treatment approach involves addressing the condition at the root level by correcting the imbalance in your gut.

Natural treatment for irritable bowel begins with a well-rounded therapeutic dietary protocol. In addition to dietary changes, recommended stress management techniques, healing treatments, and therapeutic herbs and supplements are prescribed to address the root causes and improve gut health.

Atmantan’s personalised wellness approach provides significant benefits in addressing and managing this condition. By focusing on the underlying disease-causing pathways, our programme ensures a holistic treatment approach that enhances gut health and long-term health benefits.

Here are certain parameters of our integrated wellness programme that help manage IBS (All our programmes are personalised for you):

Diet and Nutrition: Diet and nutrition forms an integral part of a comprehensive IBS management plan. By identifying and avoiding trigger foods and making mindful eating choices, individuals with IBS can significantly improve their gut health. Our prescribed diet includes pre and pro-biotics, a low FODMAP diet along with food that eliminating toxins, reducing inflammation and restoring the gut balance.

Movement and Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity helps stimulate the digestive system, promoting regular bowel movements, enhancing gut motility, and reducing stress. Partake in low-to-moderate intensity workouts such as walking, swimming, or Yoga will postively influence digestion and also impove the stress levels.

Adequate Sleep: Poor sleep disrupts the normal gut functioning, which will cause an exacerbation in the IBS symptoms such as pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. By prioritising sleep hygiene, individuals with IBS can alleviate this condition, boost their immune system, ensure hormonal balance and encourage a healthier gut microbiome by improving the sleep cycle

Stress Management: IBS as a disorder signals a disruption in the gut-brain interaction. This leads to a stress built up along with compromised mental health (After all, 95% of Serotonin, the mood hormone is produced in the gut, and a poorly functioning gut alter this hormone, thereby impacting our mood). While managing IBS, one must also actively work towards dissipating the built-up stress. Our thoughtfully curated techniques of meditation, deep breathing exercises, Yoga, and other mindfulness practices help you better manage both the stress and IBS, which co-exists in most cases.

Mind-Body Therapies: We incorporate holistic treatments to manage IBS, which combines the mind and body principles, drawn from our ancient healing schools of medicine along with modern detoxification techniques. This includes Shirodhara, Janu Vasti, Colonics, Energy healing as well as as Kriyas. In addition to these, we also prescribe personalised therapies to eliminate toxins and enhance overall health.

Education and Support: Atmantan is committed towards empowering and teaching individuals on how to best manage IBS by making positive and timely lifestyle changes. Our team of Doctors and medical experts offer comprehensive, and personalised insights into understanding this gastrointestinal disorder. Along with key diagnostic procedures, dietary counseling to identify triggers, and improved lifestyle choices, one becomes adept at mastering the management of this condition.

Herbal and Natural Remedies: Nutritional supplements and natural herbs help in eradicating SIBO and restoring beneficial gut flora. These bridge the nutritional gap and enable gut recovery, thus improving digestive health. Atmantan Naturals herbs and supplements such as Digestive Enzymes, Gut Revive, Gastro Care, Pre-Gut and probiotics all help alleviate IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, irregular bowel movements and seed the good bacteria in our system. LIFE BEFORE ATMANTAN

At the young age of 25, he was expected to be having the time of his life—going out, partying with friends, dancing, and creating memories. However, instead of living it up, he found himself feeling sluggish and tired all the time… he felt like an old man.

Being overweight and constantly dealing with gut issues like acidity and bloating had severely impacted his naturally cheerful personality. In addition, he had also been diagnosed with osteoarthritis a couple of years back.

Reaching his limit, he sought guidance from his parents, who pushed him to visit Atmantan for a holistic treatment for IBS. At first, he was uncertain and thought that perhaps this place was not for people like him, but nevertheless, he decided to give it a shot.

HEALING JOURNEY AT ATMANTAN

Upon the guest’s arrival at Atmantan, our Doctors conducted a comprehensive consultation and made sure he was at ease throughout the process. Following this, he was prescribed a 21-day Master Cleanse programme.

The Doctor conducted his Body Composition Analysis (BCA) to evaluate his various parameters of body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone density, and hydration levels. The results showed that he was 40 kgs overweight and his visceral fat was also very high and needed to be crucially addressed.

Additionally, other diagnostic tests were prescribed, that included stress tests, stool test, X-rays, CRP and ESR to test the inflammatory markers; All these enabled the Doctor gather a deeper understanding of his health status. During the consultation, he also shared complaints of acidity, bloating and irregular bowel movements, which were the common symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

His Ayurvedic IBS treatment plan included Shirodhara and Janu Vasti as well as a few kriyas to help alleviate his IBS symptoms. He was also recommended a colon hydrotherapy to cleanse and flush out waste and toxins from his gut. The guest also found relaxation through Pranic Healing and Meditation sessions, which complemented his overall healing journey.

Supporting these treatments were a plethora of physical activities. The guest engaged in 3 to 4 activities daily. He was recommended to partake in slower activities like breathing exercises and Yoga. In addition, some high-intensity workouts including functional and core training sessions also formed a part of his programme. Physiotherapy sessions were also scheduled for him to help address his joint pains and strengthen his core.

As for his diet, initially, the guest was put on a juice detox to eliminate toxins and cleanse his body from the inside-out. Following this, he was put on a gluten-free and lactose-free diet to aid in gut healing, reduce inflammation, and improve overall digestion. While it took a day or two for him to adjust, much to his own amazement, the guest started finding the food quite enjoyable, contrary to his expectations. He also mentioned that, for the first time in his life, he was being mindful of both what he was eating and the quantity he was consuming.

He was also prescribed Atmantan Naturals’ Digestive Enzymes to help regulate gut homeostasis and prevent unwanted bacterial overgrowth; Gut Revive to ensure optimal growth of bacteria in the colon for proper gut functioning; Gastro Care to rebalance the pH levels and makes it very inhospitable for disease-causing bacteria and probiotics to alleviate symptoms, such as abdominal pain and irregular bowel movements.

HIS TRANSFORMATION | 21 days

Our esteemed guest’s transformation at the end of his 21-day retreat was truly remarkable! He had achieved a weight loss of a massive 12.3 kgs and his visceral fat had also reduced from 19 to 17 (While the normal readings recommend below 10, this was a start in the right direction). Most of all, since his bowel movements had become regular, he was experiencing significantly reduced bloating and acidity. Even his joint pain had decreased noticeably as he had become more active.

All in all he felt lively and energetic, just like the vibrant 25-year-old he truly was. He felt young and motivated to continue with these habits back home and knew that this was exactly the new beginning he needed. He had enjoyed his time here and the support of the young team.

He, going back home feeling younger and healthier was the perfect return gift for his parents.
