PCOS/ PCOD Treatment Protocol

PCOS is really an umbrella term for the collection of symptoms that are associated with a specific hormonal imbalance, low-grade inflammation, obesity, and insulin resistance.

“I had PCOD thanks to which I was putting on weight but that was just the beginning of my troubles… mentally too I wasn’t in a great place.” This 29-year-old esteemed guest of Atmantan started her inspiring journey at a point in life where she had lost hope but with her determination and strong will, she was able to overcome some of her life’s biggest hurdles.

“The visceral fat has dropped by 3 points and is back in the normal range! And I have lost 6 kgs! The doctors told me that, this was fantastic for someone with PCOD. I even managed to taper my meds.” exclaims the guest.

Atmantan’s Approach to PCOS & PCOD Management & Reversal

KNOW MORE ABOUT PCOS

PCOS aka Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is not just about having multiple cyst on your ovaries, as the term may suggest. PCOS is really an umbrella term for the collection of symptoms that are associated with a specific hormonal imbalance (like in the case of PCOD), low-grade inflammation, obesity, and insulin resistance.

We classify PCOS into 4 categories:

  • Insulin Resistance induced PCOS
  • A condition in which excess Androgen is released into the Ovaries
  • A continuous Viral/Bacterial/Fungal that causes PCOS
  • PCOS caused due to a Gut Dysbiosis

The consequent insulin resistance & the inflammation caused in the above scenarios can all lead to an elevated insulin level. At this stage, the ovaries release excess testosterone which prevents the cells from maturing and often also causes chronic disruption to the menstrual cycle.

Did you know: When one is suffering from PCOD, their ovaries start releasing immature eggs that lead to hormonal imbalances and swollen ovaries, (among other symptoms) and in PCOS the endocrine issues cause the ovaries to produce excess androgens, making the eggs prone to becoming cysts! These cysts, unlike in the case PCOD won’t be released, instead they tend to build up in the ovaries itself.

PCOD – THE THERAPEUTIC APPROACH

PCOD, or polycystic ovary disease, basically is a metabolic disorder with hormonal imbalances. We could also call this an endocrine disorder, where the ovaries release immature eggs, leading to hormonal imbalances and irregular menstrual cycles. This is common in women of reproductive ages, and is known to affect between 5-15% of women.

This disease is thought to be the result of an interaction between genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. If PCOD is not effectively managed by embracing a healthy lifestyle, it might result in a number of other issues. It’s critical to keep in mind that PCOD is a complicated and heterogeneous condition and that every person may have a unique set of risk factors for developing it.

CURE – GOAL OF DISORDER MANAGEMENT

  • Assess and treat the underlying causes and imbalances that contribute to the expression of the PCOS
  • To reduce the visceral fat and reverse the insulin resistance
  • Establish hormone modulation to help with androgen dominant PCOD with the help of a prescribed diet and recommended herbal formulations
  • Restore the signaling between brain and ovaries i.e. the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Ovarian Axis
  • Balance the gut microbiomes that can trigger the development or growth of the PCOS

ATMANTAN’s MANAGEMENT and TREATMENT PROTOCOL for PCOD

Integrated wellness can have a positive impact on the treatment of PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Disease) by addressing the underlying factors that contribute to the condition. You can (to a large extent) manage this illness by making certain lifestyle modifications.

Here are some ways our integrated wellness programme helps you better manage PCOD (All our programmes are personalised for you):

  • Diet and Nutrition: The prescribed diet plan will include high fibre and low carbohydrate foods which help to combat insulin resistance by slowing down digestion and reducing the effect of sugar on the blood. While focusing on whole, unprocessed foods  that aim to balance blood sugar levels and manage insulin resistance, which is commonly associated with PCOD, we also prescribe foods rich in fibre, lean proteins, and healthy fats while eliminating refined sugars and carbohydrates. This is prescribed along with natural pre and probiotics in the diet to eliminate the pathogens and re-inoculate the friendly bugs (microbiome) in the gut. This diet is also supplemented with natural herbal formulations that help block the androgen formation in the body and enable the HPA (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal) Axis and HPO (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Ovarian) Axis to balance better.
  • Movement, Exercise and Physical Activity: Regular physical activity is crucial in managing PCOD. Your exercise programme here would incorporate aerobic exercises, strength training, and activities to improve flexibility and reduce stress. To also help improve the visceral fat, and to better manage the weight parameters, there will be recommended movement sessions throughout the programme. Exercise modulates the HPOA to improve sex hormone disorders and increase ovulation and pregnancy rates in patients with PCOS infertility.
  • Stress Management: Chronic stress can exacerbate PCOS symptoms. Our programme incorporates stress reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, and mindfulness practices. These can all help regulate hormone levels and improve overall well-being.
  • Adequate Sleep: We guide you to better implement a regular sleep schedule so as to ensure sufficient restorative healing. The lack of sleep can negatively affect the hormonal balance and glucose metabolism in our bio-system and these are also the key areas affected by PCOD.
  • Education and Support: Atmantan believes that the knowledge about PCOD and learning how to manage it, is incredibly empowering. Our Doctor’s share information about this condition and this knowledge helps you make informed choices about treatment plan and lifestyle modifications; the results achieved thus become sustainable even in the day to day life!
  • Mind-Body Practices: We especially integrate mind-body approaches from the schools of Ayurveda and Naturopathy such as Abhyanga, Kashayavasthi, Mathravasthi, Udwarthanam, acupuncture, energy healing, mediation, counselling etc. into your programme as these powerful practices can help improve and manage inflammation, hormonal imbalances, regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce stress! We thus also specialise in PCOS Ayrurveda treatment modalities.
  • Herbal and Natural Remedies: Nutrient supplementation improves FSH levels and chronic low-intensity inflammatory response and micronutrient supplementation promotes paired follicle development in PCOS infertility patients. Some herbs and supplements, such as AAAA, CBBB and Omega-3 fatty acids, are known to have positive effects on PCOS symptoms; our Doctors are trained in integrative medicine to determine the appropriateness and dosage of these herbal formulations for you.

We recommend you to consult with our Doctors and they will best advice you on a comprehensive treatment plan going forward.

A young 29-year-old’s Journey battling weight loss and PCOD

LIFE BEFORE ATMANTAN

A young 29-year-old who has been suffering from PCOD was suffering from related symptoms of weight gain but was feeling mentally demotivated. She was at a stage in her life where she had stopped looking at herself in the mirror. She decided to come to Atmantan for 21 days with her mother to finally address her issues.

HEALING JOURNEY AT ATMANTAN

Upon her arrival, she had a Doctor consultation where they went through her entire medical history, ran diagnostics on her and studied her blood works. She complained of skin tags, darkened skin around the nape of neck, facial hair, and acne. Suffering from related stress, sugar cravings and mood swings, she also felt fatigued, and was experiencing poor sleep and weight gain. Her reports showed that her HOMA IR Ratio (a test to measure how resistant your cells are to insulin) was above 4. Even her fasting insulin & fasting sugar ratio (LH – FSH) ratio was high. Her blood markers surprisingly showed that she was suffering from significant insulin resistance! (She hadn’t been diagnosed as a case of insulin resistance till date.) Even the ultrasound of the abdomen showed multiple cysts in ovaries, which and the PCOD. Her reports also showed high testosterone, which explained the excessive hair growth.

She was put on a 21-day Weight Balance and PCOD Ayurveda treatment programme to help reset the gut and balance the hormones. Her PCOS Ayurveda treatment plan needed to address both her conditions of PCOD and insulin resistance. Her treatment schedule included body wraps, ubtans, scrubs, Colon hydrotherapy, other detoxifying therapies and Ayurvedic treatment for PCOS. Along with this, she participated daily in various healing sessions that included Yoga, Pranic healing, functional circuit training, Aqua, dance and other high intensity trainings.

For the duration of her stay, she was prescribed a diet that had moderate protein, high fat, no carbs. With breakfast including smoothies and lunches and dinners having salads and soups, she felt great as she was making small changes and yet feeling satiated. Her diet was also supplemented with Naturals Ovu Plus (for PCOD support), Omega 3 (Essential Fatty Acid, EPA-DHA supplement), Dia-solve (Improves Glucose-lipid metabolism) and

HER TRANSFORMATION I 21 Days

Please Note: These results may vary depending upon body type and pre-conditions.

In just 21 days, she had learnt to manage her weight, stress, sleep, diet and amped her fitness; she had undergone a brilliant transformation…

  • Her medicines for PCOD had been tapered
  • She had achieved a weight loss of 6 kgs (which is a great achievement for someone with PCOD)
  • Her Visceral fat (abdominal obesity) had dropped by 3 points and was closer to the normal range.
  • Even her skin pigmentation, which was initially at grade 3, was now at grade 1. Her skin had improved significantly by the time of discharge!
  • Her anthropometric measurements also revealed a significant reduction in the waist-to-hip ratio as well. She was feeling the inch-loss.

Most of all, she had started feeling like her former self again. Cheerful and motivated, she now looked forward to working out every single day and had decided to continue her diet even after going back home. She was advised to introduce healthy carbs slowly into her diet (post 1 month) and she chose to stay in touch with the Doctors. She stayed on track with her PCOD Ayruveda treatment protocols and continued getting fitter. She stays strong on her wellness journey.
